福岡県うきは市にある杉工場は創業1886年。学校の机や椅子、体育道具、遊具などの製造に始まり、現在は学習机が主力商品です。杉工場では、長く愛用してほしいという想いから「学習机」ではなく「デスク」と呼んでいます。
ファミリア
教師、学生、保護者、そして杉工場の現場スタッフ、営業スタッフ、あらゆる人たちと対話を繰り返し、複数の疑問点や矛盾点を抽出。学びに特化はしても限定はしない、家族の誰もが愛用できる家具シリーズ「Familia（ファミリア）」のコンセプトが生まれました。
ドロワートレイ
ファミリアは、特定の誰かというより誰のものにもなれる自由度を大切にしたシリーズ。ドロワートレイも同じ発想です。キャビネットデスクでの使用だけでなく、広い天板の上では、対面で双方から引き出すことができます。また引き出しはトレイになっており、取り出して好きな場所に移動も可能です。アイデアの出発点となったのは、工場内にあった端材でラフに作られた工具棚。それは必要最小限の足し算から生まれた形でした。機能性はもちろん、構造そのものが意匠となっているような潔く健やかな姿を、ドロワートレイでは薄いスチールと無垢材で表現。杉工場がかつて作っていた跳び箱のような佇まいになりました。
Sugikojo Company was established in Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1886. It began by manufacturing school desks, chairs, exercise equipment, and playground equipment, and its current leading products are study desks. Because Sugikojo wants you to use these desks for a long time, they refer to them not as “study desks,” but as “desks,” using the English pronunciation.
Familia
Various concerns and contradictions were identified through repeated dialog with various people ranging from teachers, students, and caregivers to the on-site staff and sales staff at Sugikojo. This birthed the furniture series concept “Familia,” furniture specialized for but not limited to learning activities that can be used by everyone in the family.
Drawer-Tray
The Familia series values the freedom of use by all, as opposed to use by only a certain individual. The DrawerTray is based on the same concept. Not only can it be used in the CabinetDesk, but when placed on the wide flat panel, the drawers can be pulled open from either side. Furthermore, the drawers can become trays and be removed and transferred to a desired location. The idea for this product arose from the tool shelves roughly made with timber offcuts in the factory. This form was created with the minimum addition required. Highly functional, the simple shape in which the structure itself is the design is expressed in the DrawerTray in steel and solid wood. It has the appearance of the vaulting boxes once created by Sugikojo.
